Doris A. Cornwell

Doris A. (Adair) Cornwell, 101, of Mendon, IL., passed away at 2:00 p.m., on Tuesday, November 7, 2023, at her home.  She was born on November 29, 1921, at home on the McNay place near Loraine, IL., a daughter of Lewis and Amanda (McNay) Adair.  She married Richard Earel Cornwell on January 25, 1940, at the rectory of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Palmyra, MO. He preceded her in death on July 12, 2003.

Doris attended Fawbush Grade School, Lima High School and was a 1939 graduate of Mendon Township High School which is now Unity High School.  She was a lifelong member of St. Edward Catholic Church and the oldest living member of the church.  She was treasurer of the Altar Society at the church, sponsored the Newman Club, provided transportation for the nuns who taught religion on the weekends, and was a member of the Leisure Club. 

One of Doris’ greatest pleasures was attending the sporting and musical activities of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

The family would like to thank her caregivers, Matt Hanlin, Molly Schulte, Connie Bealor, Joanne Obert-Finnigan, Trista Neisen and Kristy Scranton for the excellent care they provided.

Doris is survived  by her three sons, Dennis Cornwell, Alan (Beth) Cornwell, Brian Cornwell; son-in-law, Ray Corrigan; daughter-in-law, Marcia Cornwell; grandchildren, Mark (Carol) Corrigan, Stacy (Michael) Chapman, Brent Corrigan, Tony Corrigan, Paula (Scott) Webster, Kelle (Brad) Begeman, Lori Cornwell, Kristen (Matt) Lingafelter, Aaron (Tracy) Cornwell, Jason (Jessica) Cornwell, Jaime (Dan) Clark, John (Crystal) Cornwell, Kasey (Lindsey) Cornwell, Jenna (Dan) VaLeu, and Jacob Cornwell; great grandchildren, Ray, Luke, Daron, Amanda, Amos, Christi, Kelly, Travis, Ashley, Caleb, Noah, Seth, Hannah, Levi, Nicholas, Victoria, Dylan, Cole, Eryn, Eric, Breanne, Brennan, Ryan, Katee, Megan, Abby, Austin, Lauren, Kyle, Emma, Aubrey, Brody, Bailey, Leo, Xander; great great grandchildren, Lily, Kinsey, Kai, Alexandria, Adler, Asher, Arleigh, Dantae, David, Lincoln, Hazel, Harper, Hayden, Thea, Constance, Rose, Ollie, Mitchell, Jamara, and Jacob.  Many nieces and nephews also survive.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Richard; daughter, Constance (Connie) Corrigan; son, Lyle Richard Cornwell; daughter-in-law, Linda Cornwell; granddaughter, Katee Marie Cornwell; brothers, Leo (Betty) Adair, Jesse (Rozella) Adair, and Carl (Alice) Adair; three sisters, Ruth (Elva) Andrew, Marjorie (Joe) Hurley and Mildred (Delbert) Reiter.

A Funeral Mass for Doris will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 11, 2023, at St. Edward Catholic Church in Mendon, IL.  Fr. Scott Snider to officiate.  Interment at Calvary Cemetery in Quincy, IL.  The visitation will be held at the St. Edward Catholic Church on Saturday morning from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the mass at 10:00 a.m.  Memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Childrens Hospital.  You are invited to share memories and leave condolences for the family at www.triplettfuneralhomes.com
