MARCELLINE, Ill. -- Melvin Eugene Mayfield, 79, of Marcelline, died Friday (July 5, 2013) in the North Adams Home, Mendon.

Melvin was born Feb. 5, 1934, in Quincy, a son of the late Lester and Alice Nicholson Mayfield. He married Betty Jo Arnold on Dec. 23, 1952, in Corning, Ark. She died March 3, 2007.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. He retired from General Motors after nearly 40 years of service.

He was a member of the Moose Lodge and AmVets. He was an avid gardener and loved fishing and golfing, and could fix anything. He especially loved spending time with his grandchildren.

Surviving are three sons, Stephan (Dawn) Mayfield of Janesville, Wis., Lester (Patty) Mayfield of Roscoe and Gregory Mayfield of Hermosa Beach, Calif.; nine grandchildren, Chad (Julie) Mayfield of Janesville, Lindsey (Chad) Harnack of Janesville, Corey (Nicole) Mayfield of Loves Park, Michael (Lindsay) Mayfield of South Beloit, Shawn Mayfield (Whitney Lashock) of Rockford, Madison Mayfield of Hermosa Beach, Zachary Mayfield of Hermosa Beach, Ryan Mayfield of Hermosa Beach and Josh Mayfield of Janesville; eight great-grandchildren; four brothers, Quentin Mayfield, Ronnie Mayfield, Lavern Mayfield and Gary Mayfield; Josh Mayfield's mother, Kala Mayfield; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Rodney Mayfield; a grandson, Jacob Mayfield; and nine siblings.

SERVICES: 10 a.m. Monday in the Hunter Funeral Home, Mendon. Interment will be in New Providence Cemetery, near Ursa.

VISITATION: 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home.
