Richard W. Neil, 85, of Quincy, formerly of Mendon, died at 2:56 p.m. Saturday (April 5, 2014) in the Ellenton Hospice House in Palmetto, Fla.

Richard was born on Aug. 22, 1928, in Tioga, a son of the late Jewell and Freida Miller Neil. He married Dorothy Brickman on Dec. 12, 1948, in Warsaw. Dorothy survives of Quincy.

Richard was a charter member of the Lima Federated Church in Lima. He is a member of the Lima Masonic Lodge No. 135, Quincy Consistory, Quincy Shrine Club, Eagles Club, Moose Club and Elks Club. He was a past mayor of Lima, former member of the Lima Fire Department, Mendon Lions Club and a past Adams County Fair Board member, serving part of those years as secretary.

In 1953, he started Neil Oil Company in Mendon, retiring in 2006.

Richard and Dorothy spent the winters in Florida. He loved fishing, camping and in his younger years, hunting. He loved listening to country music and playing cards. He was a very social person and loved spending time with family and friends.

In addition to Dorothy, Richard is survived by three children, Dave (Patti) Neil of Quincy, Janet Shelton of Springfield, Carol (Scott) Neudecker of Alton; seven grandchildren, Steven Neil of Jupiter, Fla., Matt Neil of Quincy, Christian (Lauren) Shelton of Chicago, Lucas (Jennifer) Shelton of Springfield, Kendall (Brad) Davis of Alton, Kayla (Jon) Grant of Highland, Drew Neudecker of Liberty, Mo.; one great-grandchild, Jack Neil of Jupiter; two brothers, Donald (Lou) Neil of Canton, Mo., James (Margie) Neil of Tioga; three sisters, Lavon Hemming of Quincy, Virginia Wilson of Mendon, Marlys Smith of Hamilton and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three brother-in-laws.

SERVICES: 10 a.m. Saturday in the Madison Park Christian Church in Quincy. Interment will be in Quincy Memorial Park in Quincy.

VISITATION: 5-7 p.m. Friday, April 11, 2014 in the Hunter Funeral Home in Mendon with a Masonic service at 7 p.m.

MEMORIALS: Shriners Children's Hospital, St. Jude's Children's Hospital or Madison Park Christian Church.
