Roger L. Phillips, 80, of Quincy, Illinois passed away at 8:47 p.m. on Thursday, July 31, 2025, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy.
Roger was born on November 7, 1944, in Quincy, Illinois, to the late Robert and Pauline (Brown) Phillips. He graduated from Payson High School and continued his education at Quincy University and Hannibal-LaGrange College. On August 8, 1978, he married Penny Wilson at the Federated Church of Lima. She survives.
He served as a Methodist minister, leading congregations at both the Paloma Church and the Federated Church of Lima. After leaving the ministry, he held positions outside the church with Shellerglobe, Rubbermaid, and Blessing Hospital until retiring in 2010. He served as Mayor of Lima through the 2003 tornado.
Roger was an active member of LifePoint Church. He had a passion for bowling. His interests included reading, solving jigsaw puzzles, hunting, fishing, playing pool, and following a wide range of sports. Roger was a dedicated supporter of the St. Louis Cardinals and the Fighting Illini. In later years, he participated in fantasy baseball and football leagues. Despite not being particularly proficient with technology, he continued to pursue his hobbies and interests enthusiastically.
He is survived by his loving wife, Penny; children, John (Tina) Phillips and Amanda (Doug) Degitz both of Quincy, Ashley (Mike) Huffman of Hamilton, Illinois, Tammy (Marty) Pressey and Elizabeth (Ken) Owens both of Liberty, Illinois; grandchildren, Jessica (Alex) Nieders, Brady (Meagan) Whitney, James Phillips, Michael, Charlotte, Veronica, and Gabriella Huffman; great grandchildren, Ryleigh, Karli and Everly Nieders; his sister, Judy Howell of Hannibal, Missouri. Numerous nieces, nephews and other family members also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother-in-law, Russell Howell.
Funeral services for Roger are scheduled for Wednesday, August 6, 2025, at 10:00 am at LifePoint Church, 3926 Harrison Street, Quincy. Burial will take place at New Providence Cemetery in Ursa, Illinois. Pastor Chris Woodard will preside over the service. Visitation is set for Tuesday evening from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Triplett Funeral Home of Mendon. Memorial contributions in Roger's name may be made to the Blessing Foundation or Make Room Building Completion at LifePoint Church.
